I like most of you have been watching the Croc Hunter ever since he first came on Animal Planet. I have been a fan of his from that moment. Steve was a showman, but he was one that always respected the animal(s) that he came into contact with and that was really cool to me.
You see, one of the many duties I perform at my job, I am an Animal Control Officer. Our duties today are somewhat more difficult and dangerous than they were in the days of the "dog catcher". It's not just about dealing with dogs anymore, although dogs are the primary basis of our job. Today we deal with animal abuse/cruelty, rabies more than ever, and undomesticated animals are now making more of a showing especially in rural communities such as Coleman, Texas. We deal with mountain lions, porcupines, deer, various snakes (including rattlesnakes), possums, raccoons and the ever popular skunk. You may ask what the heck does this have to do with Steve "Crocodile Hunter" Irwin.
When I first assumed the position as one of the ACO's for the City of Coleman, I was under the impression that I could handle the animals regardless of the situation. Well, I lied to myself, and it almost cost me a trip to the hospital had my partner not have been with me, it was my first day on the job. After this near incident, I began to study more about the actions of animals, what to look for in their posture and try to develop for myself a way to look into that animals eyes and see if we are communicating or if I'm dealing with a critter that has an attitude. I also began to watch guys like Jeff Corwin, the Animal Precinct crew and Steve Irwin trying to better understand the techniques they use. Granted I will not ever pick up a snake regardless the situation....not bare handed anyways....my partner though, that's another story, sometimes I think she's fearless!!! Yes I said 'she'.....so back off!!!
Anyway, Steve really impressed on me that as long as you show an animal the respect that it deserves for the most part that animal is going to show you the respect you deserve thus making it easier to handle the situation. Not to say that I haven't ever made mistakes and ended up getting bit.....because I have!! But it was of no animals fault just of my own. Unfortunately I have played a major role in two separate raids with my partner and our partners from the Police Department where we seized approximately 30 dogs from the inside of a two bedroom house with no furniture and the dogs had never been outside in seven (7) years.....you can't imagine what that was like. And another raid where we seized approximately 80 dogs and 20+ cats from a two bedroom mobile home with numerous 'pet cemetery's' in the back yard.....you can't imagine what that was like either, really you just can't unless you've been a part of it!!!! But you have to have a love and desire for the animals.....you are their only advocate. Children have wonderful advocates such as the C.A.S.A. foundation that speaks out for them when they've been put in harm's way, but who speaks out for the animals when they can't tell their side of the story.....WE DO!!! We the people that are involved on a daily basis with animals that need love and care just like people do. How do people expect to care for their child when most people can't even remember to feed their dog or cat at least once a day?
I have always had a great deal of respect for animals as a child. Thank God my dad was a man that instilled that into me at an early age.
Thank you Terri, Bindi and Bob for sharing your husband/father with us. Thank you God for letting us have Steve here on this chunk of rock for what seemed like such a short time and for letting him be the conservationist and animal lover that he was.
We grieve the loss of an exemplary man, we've learned from his knowledge and understanding of the wild yet we rejoice at the fact that he made it to Heaven first.
God Speed Steve 'Crocodile Hunter' Irwin...........You Will Be Missed!!!

Dear Terri, Bindi, Bob, Mr Irwin Snr, Steve's friends, colleagues and family - we send our sincere love and deepest sympathy. We can't fathom how you and indeed the rest of the world can be robbed of someone who makes such a difference to the world every single day. We know the amazing zest for life that Steve had and the wonderful work he did for the animal kingdom, the knowledge he gave the world, young and old alike. BUT what he taught all of us is how to be humble, compassionate and giving. The outstanding warmth and love he had for his family was a lesson to us all on how to lead a better and more rewarding life. Steve truly was a believer of 'you get out of this life, what you put in to it' and he has left a legacy of love that is the envy around the world. We share in your loss Terri, Bindi, Bob and Mr Irwin Snr, and know Steve will be with you every step of the way, where ever you go, he will be there right beside you. You have a place in all our hearts as does Steve. God Bless.

With deepest sympathy, i want to send my condolense to Terri, Bindi and her brother for the irreparable loss of a wonderful husband and father. I watch Steve on animal planet and i could see his passion for wild life and nature. Steve was a very simple and down to earth person who carried others along with him. He was enthusiastic, strong and full of action.
Terri, Bindi and the little boy may God almighty give you the heart to bear the loss and may he strenghten you to face each day. Remain blessed and closer to God because he is the owner of all living thing.

First of all let me just say Terri, Bindi, Bob and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Terri, if there were ever two people meant for each other it was you and Steve. My heart goes out to you in this difficult time.
I remember the first time I saw Steve on TV, I thought wow what a handsome guy! Then I continued watching the show and was so surprised by his enthusiasm for wildlife. It's been 13 years since that first time. I feel as though I've grown up with him. It's sad to think that he's gone.
